White paper: The power of thank you

This paper from Benefex explores the benefits of recognition beyond box-ticking; and outlines how to implement a recognition strategy.

White paper: The power of thank you 1

Key findings

  • In 2010 Grant and Gino investigated the impact of a ‘thank you’ on helpful behaviour. They asked participants to help someone with feedback on a cover letter. After providing feedback, half were thanked and half weren’t but all were asked to help again. The results: only 32 per cent of those who weren’t thanked provided help, whereas 66 per cent of those who were thanked gave support.
  • In 2013, Mendoza and Schultz reviewed a series of research pieces using functional magnetic resonance imagery (fMRI). They found that the reward centre in the brain concerned with being thanked lights up when observing someone being thanked.
  • In 2018, a study by Globoforce revealed that HR professionals are more likely to rate their recognition programme highly if: it aligns to the company core values and it’s funded by at least one per cent of payroll.

The paper goes on to explain the ‘must haves’ for any recognition scheme and how technology can be used to recognised individuals and teams, regardless of where they’re based.
