Video tutorial: Unmind’s Dr Nick Taylor on disruptive tech vs traditional methods for mental health

Valuing your workforce’s mental health is key to reducing problems such as absenteeism and presenteeism and digital can help where traditional face to  face methods are struggling, according to Dr Nick Taylor, clinical psychologist and CEO of Unmind.

However he said it complemented rather than replaced traditional methods. “Traditional is not better than digital and digital is not better than traditional,” he told delegates in a disruptor session at the REBA Innovation Day 2018.

He said employers had to understand that mental health was not a dirty word and that it needed to be understood through three lenses – biology, social and psychological make-up.

Early intervention is as crucial in mental health as it is in physical health, he said with prevention being better than cure. Taylor said that companies had to reduce the chances of problems arising in the first place to ensure employees can stay well.

However for effective prevention and early intervention he said digital was key since traditional face to face methods are so stretched and digital tech allows for greater scalability of services. “Digital is the only thing that will truly allow prevention and early intervention and it can signpost to services and get people to the right care at the right time,” he said.

This video was recorded at the REBA Innovation Day 2018, held in London on 22 November.
