The commitment by government to halve the disability employment gap is a key driver in its aim to deliver wellness in the UK, according to Huw Meredith, head of delivery, work and health unit at the Department of Work and Pensions. Meredith was part of a panel discussion at REBA’s Employee Wellness Conference that discussed the government’s framework for wellness and the five year plan.

“The whole agenda is around ensuring peole have a constructive relationship around work and health. The ambition is to improve and where neccesary transform the system to acheive this target of getting a million people back into work and the wellbeing agenda is at the heart of makig it all happen,” said Meredith.

Dr Peter Kelly, psychologist, Health & Safety Executive, said that not having health and wellbeing at the heart of a business leads to disengagement, which, in turn leads to increased risk. “If people are not engaged you will get ill-health because people experienceing higher pressure will become ill and engage in behaviour that leads to accidents,” he said.

As well as Meredith and Kelly the panel discussion included Robert Cochran, corporate pensions specialist at Scottish Widows and Dr Roxane Gervais, occupational psychologist, Health & Safety Laboratory.
