Rebecca Adlington OBE on preventing burnout culture in the workplace
Adlington discussed how to spot the signs of burnout. She said that there are both physical and mental signs to being burnt out, with her own experience being trouble sleeping even when tired or being exhausted even after a good nights sleep.
"Mentally and emotionally I just get to the point where I can't be bothered, I know that seems blunt, but I just want to be by myself and switch off," she added.
Adlington provides an insight into how, during this period of lockdown, she has supported her own employees to cope with this stressful situation. She said that a key strategy during this time was to continue to communicate and engage with employees, sending them wellbeing information. She added that now many employees are returning to work after such a long period away, in order to avoid a burnout situation, they have created an introduction back into the business.
"It's not because we don't feel the staff are engaged with the business, but a lot of people have had 14 or 15 weeks off at home on their own time, and it can be a shock to the system going back to work. We don't want that burnout situation from throwing them back into all of these hours and stress," she added.
